SEMANTICS AND FIGURATIVE FUNCTIONS OF NUMERALS IN ENGLISH TONGUE-TWISTERS
The article studies the semantic and figurative functions of numerals in the English tongue-twisters. The study is based on a corpus
of tongue-twisters with a number component and aims to identify the mechanisms through which numerals shift from bearing
quantitative meaning to figurative and text structuring roles. The analysis reveals several types of semantic shift, including
weakened quantification, hyperbolization and text structuring. It is concluded that tongue-twisters are not only phonetically, but
also semantically rich genre, in which numerals function as complex elements of language play and textual organization.
