The article examines XX–XXI century scholarship on manuscript production during the reign of Amir Timur. Written testimonies, the manuscript tradition of Nizam al-Din Shami’s Zafarnama, studies of the artistic environment of Samarkand, and the material foundations of book production are compared. Historiographical, historical-comparative, source-critical, codicological, and provenance methods are employed. The analysis identifies a methodological shift from cataloguing and stylistic attribution toward interregional exchange, mobility of craftsmen, manuscript materiality, and verification of attribution. Timurid Samarkand is interpreted not as a transplanted ready-made school, but as an environment formed through the interaction and transformation of the manuscript traditions of Transoxiana, Iran, and Iraq.
