This article explores the emergence of Romanticism in the literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, the characteristics of this period, and how romantic writers dreamed of a beautiful and perfect life, reflecting this imagined ideal life in their works. Romanticism is described as a movement striving to portray the supernatural, the marvelous, the fantastic, and idealized heroes. The article explains the place of the Romantic period in American literature; highlights various manifestations of Romanticism in different countries; and analyzes the linguistic features of romantic literary works. It also reveals the important aspects of the American Romantic era, the emergence and development of early American romantic prose, the role of Washington Irving’s work in shaping the prose of this period, and the theoretical and practical significance of the linguistic and stylistic features of his prose.
