This article is devoted to the analysis of existing studies devoted to issues of linguistic and speech norms in the French language. Lexical units are considered as the main building material of the language and its norms. In the context of the democratization of linguistic norms and the transformation of ideas about normativity, there is a tendency towards an increasingly widespread use of simplified linguistic units. It is noted that this process must be taken into account by both lexicographers and language students, since it influences the formation of the modern lexicon and the norms of speech functioning.
