The term "map layout" is used to describe the arrangement of all of a map's elements on the page or screen where it is displayed. In addition to the cartographic image, map elements include scale, legend, map title, north arrow, author(s), sources, year and place of publication, additional maps and information, and so on, which together form a unified map. A map is not simply an image, but a reduced and generalized representation of the Earth's surface or part of it, as well as other celestial bodies, on a plane, possessing a mathematical structure and its own "language" (cartographic symbols). It is these map elements that help users read and use the map. A proper and successful map layout ensures not only its aesthetic appeal but also effective communication with the user. In this regard, this article discusses some aspects of map layout development using ArcGIS Pro, a modern GIS program.
