The paper examines the regularities of formation and migration of dissolved gases in groundwater of the Pre-Tashkent Artesian Basin. It is shown that geological and tectonic activity controls variations in groundwater gas composition, while the resulting gas anomalies may serve as hydrogeoseismological precursors of earthquakes.
Dissolved gas concentrations were determined using an integrated approach including well sampling, in situ measurements, and laboratory analyses. Background gas anomalies unrelated to seismicity were identified and are characterized by a gradual increase in concentrations from recharge areas toward zones of aquifer deepening. The established regularities provide a reliable basis for interpreting gas variations associated with seismic events.
