REPRESENTATIONS OF THE SHAHANSHAHS IN THE ROCK RELIEF SCULPTURE OF THE SASANIAN IRAN
This article analyzes the use of Achaemenid heritage by early Sasanian monarchs Ardashir I and Shapur I as a mechanism of
political legitimation and cultural continuity. The study focuses on the rock relief complexes of Bishapur and Naqsh-e Rostam.
Based on archaeological evidence and iconographic analysis, it is demonstrated that the Sasanians deliberately incorporated
Achaemenid symbols, royal imagery, and monumental spatial strategies in order to construct an imperial ideology and reinforce
the sacred nature of shahanshah authority. The investiture and triumphal scenes are examined as key visual instruments of
dynastic representation and state power.
