This article analyzes the capabilities of determining the mineral composition of the Earth’s crust and surface, as well as the
chemical properties of soils, the atmosphere, and vegetation, using the ASTER, MOPITT, and MODIS instruments on the
modern TERRA satellite, as well as SPOT systems. Based on data obtained in different ranges of electromagnetic radiation, the
spectral characteristics of various minerals-carbonates, hydroxides, and silicates-are studied, and the mechanisms of their remote
sensing are described.
