The article analyzes the concepts of «attitude to death» and «cognitive component of attitude to death». It is emphasized that the literature focuses on the consideration of representations about death, taking into account the religious and atheistic views of the personality, the type of culture to which he/she belongs, and the features of his/her socio-psychological adaptation. The results of studying the cognitive component of the attitude to death in adulthood are revealed. The methodological basis of the study was the thanatology of H.Feifel, meaning management and death acceptance theory by P. Wong, terror management theory by J.Greenberg, T.Pyszczynski, S.Solomon. A content analysis of the study participants' responses to the question of understanding death revealed that it is understood through the following categories: «transition to another world», «end of life», «religious reasons», «getting rid of pain and suffering».
