The article is devoted to the study of the role of nonverbal means in intercultural communication. It examines the theoretical foundations of the discipline established by renowned linguists. Particular attention is paid to the national and cultural specificity of paralinguistic means in English, American, and Uzbek cultures. Based on the analysis of verbal and nonverbal behavioral models, it is shown that nonverbal elements (gestures, facial expressions, posture, intonation, gaze) are an integral part of communication and largely determine its effectiveness. It is emphasized that the same nonverbal signals may carry different meanings in different cultures, which often becomes a source of communicative difficulties
