This article investigates the historical development of collective and partitive nouns in the English language as well as their semantic, morphological, and functional features. The study provides a diachronic analysis of the formation and evolution of collective nouns in Old English, Middle English, and Modern English periods. Special attention is paid to collective nouns formed with French-derived suffixes in English. The article also examines the use of singular nouns in collective meanings as a result of metonymic semantic transfer.
