Disruption of carbohydrate metabolism is one of the key pathogenetic factors in diabetes mellitus. Oxidative stress occurring under
conditions of hyperglycemia leads to changes in the functional state of the intestinal epithelium and an increase in glucose transport.
Therefore, utilizing safe supplements with potent antioxidant properties to prevent inflammation-induced complications represents
a promising approach for correcting metabolic disorders in diabetes. This article investigates the effect of correcting experimental
diabetes using a combination of astaxanthin and the trace element selenium on intestinal glucose absorption. In experimental
diabetes, astaxanthin therapy in rats did not significantly reduce postenteral hyperglycemia. However, the combination of
astaxanthin and selenium was more effective in reducing blood glucose levels in diseased animals than monotherapy. The obtained
results confirm that the astaxanthin-selenium complex can be used as an effective supplementary tool in the correction of diabetes
mellitus.
