The results of a genealogical study showed that 71.2% of patients with Type 1 diabetes had a familial predisposition to this disease. Probands (type 1 diabetes mellitus) were found to have a higher concentration of Anti-GAD compared to non-diabetic individuals, according to immune-ferment analysis of serum anti-GAD (Anti-GAD) levels. It has also been demonstrated that quantification of Anti-GAD in their blood-relatives may have prognostic significance, and these results serve as the basis for further studies in this direction.
