Although learning a second language literally means learning a language after the first language has been mastered, people do not experience any particular difficulty in mastering more than one language. On the contrary, according to popular belief, French is one of the easiest and most useful languages for a native English speaker. The main purpose of this article is to discuss some of the obvious difficulties that a native English speaker and a native Russian speaker face when learning French, as well as to highlight the importance of French as a means of communication and to suggest possible solutions to the problems encountered when learning French as a second language, especially by native English and Russian speakers.
