This article explores the functioning of the tax system in the principalities (bekliks) of the Surkhan oasis during the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, as well as its impact on the daily life of the local population. It provides an analysis of the various types of taxes levied in these regions, the procedures and amounts for their collection, and the role of tax collectors appointed by the Emirate. Furthermore, the article sheds light on the involvement of local officials in the tax-gathering process and discusses instances of dissatisfaction and resistance expressed by the working population in response to perceived injustices in taxation practices.
