Many artistic devices in language convey not only their main meanings but also figurative ones, serving as embellishments designed for specific communicative purposes. The usage of words in figurative senses plays an invaluable role in revealing the aesthetic function of the language and, more broadly, in clearly conveying the writer's aim within a literary text. Irony is considered one of such devices. In the story “Shoirning to‘yi” (“The poet’s wedding”), which we are analyzing, the author skillfully utilizes sarcasm, one of the techniques of expressing ironic meaning. The article highlights the use of irony in literary texts, the types of irony, and the means of expressing ironic meanings, through analyses based on excerpts from “Shoirning to‘yi” (“The poet’s wedding”).
