The concept of discourse has gained remarkable prominence in linguistics over the past two decades, extending its influence across nearly all branches of the discipline. Originally introduced into linguistic theory by E.Benveniste as a term denoting general or individual speech, discourse has since evolved into a complex, interdisciplinary construct. This paper explores the multiplicity of definitions and interpretations of discourse proposed by scholars from linguistics, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and other fields.
