TEACHING RUSSIAN IN XINJIANG IN THE LATE 19TH – EARLY 20TH CENTURIES

In the late 19 th – early 20th century, Russian language teaching in Xinjiang (now the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of
China) was influenced by the rapid development of Russian language teaching throughout the country, and also developed rapidly
and had a wide influence. At that time, being one of the provinces with the longest border with Russia, teaching was concentrated
mainly in the cities of Ili, Tacheng and Dihua (now Urumqi). This article describes the features of the development of Russian
language teaching in Xinjiang in the late 19th ceearly 20th century, shows its outstanding achievements, and also points out the
problems.
