THE ROLE AND FUNCTIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN SOCIAL LIFE DURING THE SOVIET ERA
This research analyzes the role and functions of photography in public life during the Soviet period (1917–1991) within the context of historical processes. It traces the gradual transformation of photography from a simple visual medium into a complex sociocultural and political instrument. The study demonstrates that in the early post-revolutionary years, photography emerged as a means of legitimizing the new political system, while later, during the era of Socialist Realism, it came under strict ideological control. It is also emphasized that during the Second World War, photography played an important role not only as a documentary tool but also as a powerful means of supporting public morale
