The article examines the main characteristics of the short story genre in twentieth-century literary studies based on dictionary,
encyclopedic, and general theoretical sources. The evolution of scholarly approaches to defining the short story and its
correlation with the novella and the sketch is analyzed. Special attention is paid to genre characteristics used in literary theory
and to their limitations when applied in isolation. The study concludes that during the second half of the twentieth century literary
scholarship gradually shifted from the terminological identification of the short story with the novella toward attempts at
intragenre differentiation
