The object of study in the article is one of the most famous works of F. Roth - “The American Trilogy”. The problems raised in the trilogy are shown against a broad background of events in the political and ideological life of the country in the last third of the twentieth century. The analysis made it possible to identify a range of problems that concerned the author: personal selfidentification, interracial relations, the impact of the “American Dream” on the fate of heroes, responsibility for abandoning one’s national identity, terrorism, left-wing extremism, the impact of the Vietnam War on the fate of ordinary Americans
