This article analyzes the current issues of forming the research competence of future biologists in the higher education system. The role and theoretical foundations of international assessment programs such as PISA and TIMSS in shifting from traditional rote learning to developing students' practical skills are examined. The article highlights the methodological prospects of integrating the fundamental principles of international assessment criteria – such as a contextual approach, activation of metacognitive skills, and ensuring interdisciplinary connections – into biology education. Furthermore, based on a review of scientific literature, the advantages of PISA-formatted competence-based tasks in developing research skills in future biologists, including identifying a scientific problem, proposing hypotheses, analyzing experimental data, and drawing evidence-based conclusions, are substantiated.
