In this article, the problem of developing students’ independent learning activities in higher education institutions by means of project-
based learning technology is theoretically elucidated. In addition, the limitations of existing approaches are identified and critically
analysed. In order to fill this gap, a model consisting of five interrelated stages is proposed. For each stage, the goal, the content of the
activity, the tools and the result indicators are determined. Furthermore, the model is scientifically substantiated on the basis of
constructivist learning theory and the activity approach, and practical recommendations are given regarding its application in the
educational process of higher education institutions.
