A FRAMEWORK FOR CORPUS – PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF HAPPINESS AND UNHAPPINESS IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK FOLKTALES
Research that reveals the linguistic expression of a particular concept contributes not only to linguistics but also to the development of sciences such as cultural studies, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy. In this regard, it is of great importance to analyze how “happiness”, which, in the words of the father of philosophy Aristotle, is considered “the highest value of humanity”, is realized through linguistic means in folk tales that reflect a people’s worldview, way of life, dreams, and hopes, as well as to analyze the mutual opposition between “happiness” and its antithesis, “unhappiness”. This study particularly emphasizes the importance of investigating the linguistic nature of concepts within context, i.e., from a pragmatic perspective, which reveals their function in actual speech. The article first discusses the essence and methodology of corpus pragmatics, a new direction in linguistics, and outlines the intended corpus pragmatic approach for a pragmatic analysis of the verbalizers of the conceptual binary opposition of “happiness” and “unhappiness” in English and Uzbek folk tales. The aim of the research is to develop a corpus pragmatic approach for investigating the realization of this conceptual binary opposition in folk tale texts from a pragmatic point of view.
