MORPHOBIOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MYCELIAL FUNGI ISOLATED FROM INFECTED PLANTS AND THEIR BIOHERBICIDAL ACTIVITY AGAINST WEEDS
This study aimed to identify filamentous fungi that may serve as sources of phytotoxic metabolites and to evaluate their
bioherbicidal activity against weed seeds. Samples were collected from plant organs infected with fungal diseases as well as from
their rhizosphere soils. Using standard microbiological methods, endophytic, epiphytic, and rhizospheric fungi were isolated, and
a total of 16 isolates were obtained. The cultural filtrates of the isolated strains were tested against seeds of Amaranthus retroflexus
and Chenopodium album. The results demonstrated significant variation in phytotoxic activity among the isolates. The highest
inhibition was observed in isolate 7 (81.0% and 79.0%, respectively), as well as in isolates 5 and 10.
The findings indicate that certain filamentous fungal isolates have potential as effective bioherbicides against weeds; however,
further studies are required to assess their selectivity and safety.
