This article analyzes the theoretical and practical aspects of the cognitive-motivational approach to guiding students’ independent learning in higher education institutions. The main aim of the study is to identify the relationship between motivation and cognitive processes for effectively organizing independent learning, as well as to develop methodological recommendations for use in the educational process. The study employed pedagogical observation, surveys, analysis, and experimental methods. The results indicate that independent learning based on the cognitive-motivational approach increases students’ interest in learning, enhances their self-regulation, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
