Inorganic polyphosphates (polyP), due to its structural similarity to the ATP molecule, have long been considered as an
analogue/alternative of the ATP molecule in mammalian cells. We have shown that the stimulation of bioenergetics of isolated
mitochondria through the addition of glutamate+malate or succinate led to an increase in the level of polyp. and these processes
did not depend on the presence of ATP. Experiments with intact cells showed that incubation of cells in a glucose free medium
led to a drop in the polyP level, the addition of glucose contributed to a significant increase in the level of polyP in cells. All
these processes also were depended on the presence of rotenone and oligomycin.
