After gaining national independence, the need arose to study our history, particularly the Soviet period and the events related to the so-called “cotton affair,” which had long been interpreted in a distorted and ideologically biased manner. As is well known, during the Soviet era Uzbekistan was one of the largest cotton-producing regions, supplying raw materials to the textile industry of the country. Cotton production was rapidly expanded, and new irrigated lands were brought into agricultural use. During the Soviet period, the Uzbek SSR occupied an important place in the national economy of the USSR as one of its agrarian-industrial republics. The republic’s economy was largely based on agriculture and industry and held strategic significance within the overall economic system of the Soviet Union, serving as one of the main suppliers of cotton. Cotton, commonly referred to as “white gold,” was a vital raw material for industry, particularly for the light and textile sectors. By the middle of the twentieth century, Uzbekistan had become one of the leading cotton producers in the Soviet Union in terms of production volume.
