In this study, the eco-friendly and biodegradable biopolymer chitosan was successfully extracted from silkworm (Bombyx mori)
pupae - a renewable secondary raw material from the sericulture industry. Using the solvent casting method, films of varying
thicknesses (0.027 - 0.072 mm) were synthesized from solutions of four different volumes (5, 10, 15, and 20 ml) based on the
extracted chitosan and 20% glycerol (as a plasticizer). The article investigates the kinetics of how film thickness influences the
material's hydrophilic properties.
Experimental results demonstrated that, in a liquid water environment, an increase in thickness - driven by the volumetric relaxation
of polymer chains - raises the swelling degree from 56.0% to 126%. The data obtained enable the design of optimal geometric
parameters for the targeted medical application of chitosan-based films, tailored to specific wound types (based on exudate levels)
