The kinetics of the dechroming process of chrome-tanned leather waste (chrome shavings) using citric acid solutions were
investigated at different reagent concentrations and temperatures. Based on the obtained kinetic dependencies, the reaction order
with respect to citric acid, the rate constant, and the activation energy of the process were determined. The dechroming reaction
was found to be characterized by a fractional reaction order (n = 0.44) and a relatively low activation energy (17.6 kJ/mol),
indicating that it is a multistep process governed by diffusion and complexation phenomena. A probable mechanism was proposed
involving the breakdown of Cr(III)–collagen coordination bonds and the formation of soluble chromium(III) citrate complexes.
