This article examines the aspectual semantics of the preterite in German, with particular focus on its use with telic verbs. The study demonstrates that the preterite functions not only as a marker of past tense but also as an important element of the aspectual system. Based on examples from the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the actional properties of verbs and their contextual interpretation are analyzed. The results show that telic verbs predominantly express terminative and resultative situations, whereas imitatively neutral verbs exhibit aspectual variability and can denote both processual and completed actions.
Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of aspectual dualism.
