The article distinguishes between non-equivalent vocabulary and lacuna as applied to the literary text and identifies the zones of untranslatability in the Uzbek versions of F.M. Dostoevsky's novels produced by I. Gafurov. The title of a novel is shown to be the minimal context in which lacunarity appears in its purest form: a comparison of six titles yields four types of translational transformation – calquing, functional substitution, obligatory explicitation and concretisation. Six zones of lacunarity are described; it is argued that in Dostoevsky lacunarity is concentrated in the psychological and religious strata of the vocabulary, that is, in the ideological core of the work.
