This article analyzes the practical state of formation of national and universal cultural competencies in future English language teachers. The study focuses on identifying students’ initial knowledge, skills and attitudes related to national values, intercultural communication, speech etiquette, sociolinguistic situations and pedagogical decision-making. The research is based on questionnaire, interview, observation and diagnostic analysis methods. The results show that a considerable part of students need systematic methodological support to express national values in English, understand universal cultural principles and choose appropriate communicative strategies in intercultural contexts. The article substantiates the necessity of improving these competencies through sociolinguistic case-study technology.
