THE ROLE OF PRESUPPOSITION IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK ONLINE MEDIA HEADLINES
Although news headlines are concise, they convey a substantial amount of information. Their meaning is not limited to explicitly
stated content. Readers infer information that is not directly expressed in the text by relying on their background knowledge and
contextual cues. In linguistics, this phenomenon is referred to as presupposition. This article presents a comparative analysis of the
linguistic means used to express presupposition in English and Uzbek online media headlines. The study is grounded in pragmatic
and hermeneutic approaches. Twenty authentic English and Uzbek headlines were selected and manually coded for analysis. The
preliminary findings indicate that verbs of change are among the most frequent presupposition triggers in both languages. The
principal difference lies in the expression of agentivity.
