LACTATE PROTECTS SH-SY5Y CELLS FROM ROTENONE-INDUCED NEUROTOXICITY BY REGULATING MYTOCHONDRIAL BIOENERGETICS
In this study, an in vitro Parkinson’s model was induced by rotenone in the SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell line, and the effect of Llactate on mitochondrial function was investigated. Rotenone inhibits mitochondrial complex I, leading to a decrease in membrane potential (ΨM) and, consequently, a shift of ATP synthase into hydrolysis mode. Treatment with lactate increased the ΨM levels in the cells, significantly reduced the role of F1FO ATPase in ΨM formation, and enhanced the activity of the electron transport chain (ETC).
