Diaspora, abroad, emigration. All these terms were relevant for a certain
time and up to a certain time. The first and second waves of Russian emigration around the
world, to Europe and the United States, spoke about abroad. It was called emigrant literature,
emigrant poetry.
Starting with the third wave, that is, with our wave of the 70s, early 80s, we were not
talking about emigrant literature, but about Russian literature in the diaspora. The vector of
aspirations, the spiritual direction of artists, emigrated in 70-s and 80-s changed. There was no
hope for return. “The third wave” – the 70s – 80s when we left the Soviet Union forever, saying
goodbye to our past life, without any hope of returning. Thus, the mentality was different. For
some, it was the intention to preserve their inner life, mood and, accordingly, the style of
creativity.
